Swagbucks: An Honest Review

If you've ever checked out one of those "Easy Ways to Make Money at Home" posts that are all over Pinterest, then you've probably heard of at least one survey site that pays you for your time.  I've seen tons, and I mean tons

I've tried several.  I like taking surveys, and if I can get paid to do it then sign me up.  Unfortunately though, most of them lost their appeal very quickly.  But I have stuck with one, and I want to share what I like and dislike about it just in case you're thinking about jumping on the paid survey train.

Disclaimer: This is NOT a sponsored post, but if you join Swagbucks with my link I will get some SB for the referral.  Swagbucks isn't paying me for a review.  These are all my opinions and I just wanted to share with people interested in paid survey sites.

Swagbucks is a site that pays you in swagbucks, or SB, for doing things like taking surveys, watching videos, shopping through their links, or signing up for offers.  You can trade your SB in for gift cards to several different places, including Amazon and Paypal.

Swagbucks Pros

These are several things I really like about Swagbucks, and these things are what make it worthwhile for me to continue using it.

Exchange Rate

This is what sucks about most survey sites.  Most sites give you a few points here and there and it takes forever to earn anything.

Swagbucks is great in this regard.  100 SB is equal to $1, and most surveys are worth at least 20 SB.  On average a survey will give you 50 or so SB for finishing it, and I usually take at least one a day worth 80 to 125 SB.  I easily make around $2 (200 SB) a day just taking surveys.

They also offer a $25 gift card for 2200 SB once a month, which means you save $3 on a gift card.  The fact that they do it once a month is pretty awesome.

Variety

What made me really stick with Swagbucks is the variety of ways to earn SB.  Survey's are great, but even I only want to sit through two or three before I get bored and want to do something else.

In addition to the surveys, there are good promotional offers that reward a ton of SB for trying a product.  For example, I signed up for the Dollar Shave Club trial box for $5, and got 2000 SB.  That's $20!  I made $15 just for trying a razor!  And if I stay subscribed for next month, I'll get 1500 SB for a $9 subscription.  That's $6 extra I get back.

If you're into meal box subscriptions, they have tons of offers on those too.  Plus, they usually offer a discount for being a Swagbucks user.  Blue Apron offers $40 off for signing up with a Swagbucks link and you get 3500 SB just for trying.  And if you're still into paper magazines (like me), then you will love them.  I got 2 free year subscriptions, and another 3 for $2 each.  Each subscription got me 50 SB back, and I got to get a year of my favorite magazines for either free or super cheap.

You can also get cash back in the form of SB for shopping through their links.  They have links for almost everything, so make sure you look before shopping online!  Installing the Swagbutton on your browser also helps to make sure all your shopping trips are credited to Swagbucks, which makes things easy.

Rewards for Referrals, but Doesn't Encourage Spamming Your Friends

The constant "Share this and get that!" signs from many money making sites and apps makes me crazy.  If I like something, I'll share it.  Don't ask me to share 100 times a day!

Thankfully, Swagbucks doesn't do this.  And that makes me happy.

They do encourage referrals, though, and they give some pretty good rewards for it.  Right now, if someone signs up through a referral link and earns 300 SB, then you and them both get 300 more.  Then you get 10% of their earnings forever.  So if they get 2000 SB, you'll get 200 SB just because you referred them.  Pretty sweet.

If you'd like to get that 300 SB bonus, here's my referral link. :-)

Swagbucks Cons

Even though I really love Swagbucks, there are a few things I have some major complaints with.

The Mobile App is Not Great

Actually, their mobile Apps are not great.  They have way too many apps that mostly do the same things, and none of them function super well.  The main app is the best one, but even it doesn't have as much available as the actual website.

There are also several surveys that don't work on mobile devices, so there aren't as many.  If you're wanting to do surveys on the go, then this is not the site for you, which is disappointing.

It Take a Few Days to Get Gift Cards and Points in Some Cases

The gift card one really isn't that big of a deal, since it is still very fast.  I usually get my gift cards in my email 2 days after I order them.  But knowing how fast it is to get gift card codes normally, I get impatient.

In the points situation, they're usually held for a few days after you make a purchase through one of their links or sign up for a subscription box.  I believe they do this to discourage people from cancelling orders and still collecting their SB.  It does make since, but sometimes they can be held for up to 30 days, and that's a bit insane.

Conclusion

Even with its cons, I love Swagbucks.  I've been a member for a little over a week and have already collected over $40 worth of Amazon gift cards.

I plan on continuing to use it, even if my usage becomes more casual over time, because it's a fun and profitable way to kill some time.

  1. I have heard nothing but good things about Swagbucks but gave yet to give it a try. I don't have a lot of patience when it comes to just surveys but if there is variety in getting points that helps.
