Easter Eggs

Tuesday, July 05, 2011 0 Comments
Greetings friends!

I've been busy revamping the look for Dragonfly Dusk Designs, and so far I'm very happy with the progress! My goal by the end of the month is to have the new look completed and to get some new items up for sale in the shop.

I've also been working on completely redoing my craft room. The layout just wasn't working for me anymore, and this total overhaul has really helped me organize my crafty life. I do believe I'm in the final stages of it now, and I can't wait for it to be done and ready to go.

In the meantime though, I have lots of craftiness that I haven't posted here yet, so let's back track all the way to Easter.

We have secret sisters at work (SHH! It's a secret...), and as an Easter present for mine, I hollowed out an egg:

...Something I'm surprised I did successfully on the first try. Then I got out my box-o-flowery things and glue gun and went to town:

The flowers on the inside of the egg are glued to a packing peanut. It made a perfect little Styrofoam block. ^_^

I actually bought an egg stand to display it on (not the lovely cardboard tube in the picture) and tucked it down in a little box with some candy.

The egg is actually much stronger than I ever would have thought. I cut the hole in it with my Dremel and even sanded it down and it held up perfectly. This was a really fun little project, and my secret sis seemed to really enjoy it too. <3

Corner Storage Solutions

Tuesday, June 14, 2011 0 Comments
I have a corner next to my bathroom that I needed to utilize as effectively as possible since I have NO storage space in my tiny tiny bathroom. Problem, it's at the top of my stairs and I wanted it to be as functional as possible while still being cute since it's the first thing you see when you walk up the stairs.

So first thing on the agenda, get a shelving unit. I love the cube version of bookcases for most of my storage, but since the nearest Ikea is 3 hours away, I get mine at Target. I have several in other rooms and love them. Next step: Assemble bookcase and place fish tank on top of it. Not do anything else to the corner for about a year. Awesome.

Finally over spring break I built some shelves to go above it and it kick started my motivation to work on it again. I built these shelves the same way as the one here and finally had a home for my Squinky/other tiny animal collection. Yes I love Squinkies. I can't help it.

I also got some command hooks to put my key chains on. I have a few new ones to add to the collection so I'll hopefully have a better picture of those then.

I also found these awesome bins at Target on Clearance for $4!

I could kick myself for not buying all they had. They fit in the cubes perfectly and they took my aqua spray paint excellently:

As soon as I find a configuration that I'm happy with they'll have labels. They've been great so far for storing my cleaners and laundry stuff, and I love the color.

So now my little corner looks like this:

Still might have a little work to do, but I'm pretty satisfied thus far. ^_^

I've been looking for a round table for my kitchen forever. Unfortunately, they are usually very expensive, and the nearest Ikea is 3 hours away from here. I was beginning to give up hope.

BUT luck struck me while on a trip to the ReStore. The ReStore is run by Habitat for Humanity and sells things like used furniture and building supplies to benefit the organization. I found not one, but TWO round tables at the ReStore, for $25 each!

The only problem is...they looked like this:

Nothing some sanding and a couple coats of paint couldn't cure:

I love Love LOVE having round tables! I put the second one (the one in the picture above) in my craft room and it's given me much more room to walk around it as opposed to my other one.
And the white paint makes it look so lovely!

And while I was at the refinishing thing, I took a look at this drawer I bought at Target some time ago:

I used it in my bedroom before I made my new bedside table and haven't had much use for it since. A few coats of paint and some scrapbook paper and viola!

Now it's in my hallway holding my fish tanks filters and other goodies.

I love giving old items a new lease on life! It's amazing what a few coats of paint can do. :-)

Happy Earth Day!

In honor of Earth Day, lets talk plants.

I'm always excited for Spring so I can plant my garden. I usually buy starter plants, but this year I decided to try starting some seeds myself. This was a big jump for me, since the few times I have started seeds before they've all died rather quickly. But I was bound and determined that this year, it was going to be different.

To start everything off, I did some research. I got this wonderful book called You Grow Girl by Gayla Trail. It's got all kinds of lovely information in it and I highly recommend it.

I also bought a greenhouse kit like this one to start my seeds in. I really like it too. It was super easy to set up and use and with this one I can get new mini peat pots and use is again next year.

I plan on building a garden box outside sometime in the very near future. Until then, though, my little babies have to stay inside. I bought these two clip on shop lights at Lowe's for about $8 each and fitted them with a Compact Florescent Light Bulb. Plants only need the cool spectrum of light, so CFLs work as good grow lights.

To make things easier next year, I'll probably install a light under a shelf as suggested in Trail's book and put the whole system on a timer I can set and forget about. But for now, my plants seem to be doing fine in front of my shoe cubbies. I just have to remember not to trip over them...
Almost all the seeds I planted in the greenhouse have sprouted and are doing well except for my lavender plants. I know from my farmer friend that lavender usually has a bad germination rate, so I planted 30 seeds in hopes that at least one would make it. Three have popped up so far but only one is really doing well, so I've got my fingers crossed that that one makes it.

I also was very happy to see that my lilies from last year came back in full force this year. I even re-potted and separated them and they survived!

Here's to a good growing season!

Scrap Wood Shelf

Sunday, March 27, 2011 0 Comments
This week was my spring break, so I had the whole week off to work on some projects. Mainly, my goal was to tackle the huge pile of wood that has been sitting in my kitchen for eons.

Half of the wood I bought with the intention of building small shelves for my small plastic animal collection that has been growing for years. I successfully finished those, with scraps left over to build another one for my craft room:

I needed button storage, and this turned out to be the perfect size.

All I did was cut up a 1x2 and a 1x3 and screw them together. Lots of wood putty and sanding later I had my shelves. I picked up a sample sized jar of green Valspar paint for about $3. It was the perfect amount for this shelf and the other shelves I already have hanging in my craft room that I'd like to repaint. And, since I built this out of scraps, it was the total cost for this project.

Popped a few screws in the wall and painted them green as well so they won't be as obvious. If I were putting something heavy on it I probably would have used anchors, but as is it holds my little jars just fine.

And there you go. I plan to give the yellow shelf above it a nice coat of green paint now too. I really like the bold color.

Fabric Scrap Projects

Wednesday, January 19, 2011 0 Comments
I absolutely LOVE the fabric I used on my side table project, and was really sad when I didn't have a whole lot left over to cover my entire room in.

But I did have enough left to make me a little pillow for my bed, as well as a camera strap cover for my Canon I got for a photography class:

Tutorial to make your own here. It took me all of 20 minutes to throw this together. Super easy and MUCH better than the ugly thing it was before.

And my pillow. Also a quick and super easy project to throw together.

It's official. I want more of this fabric. I must have matching curtains. And maybe some storage boxes...
